Congress Takes Action to Keep Non-Citizens Out of American Elections

Only American citizens should vote in American elections. This call to action comes amid growing concerns over non-citizens receiving voter registration forms without proof of citizenship, a practice currently occurring in 49 states, including Texas.

Welfare offices and other agencies across the United States are providing voter registration forms to migrants without requiring proof of citizenship. This widespread practice is alarming.

The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993 mandates that states register voters at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and other agencies where Americans apply for public benefits. As a result, these offices are legally required to distribute voter registration forms. Currently, federal voting forms do not require proof of U.S. citizenship, although it is illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections.

In response to these concerns, the House Administration Committee recently approved the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This bill aims to require states to obtain proof of citizenship when individuals register to vote by mail, at a DMV, or at welfare agency offices. The act would also necessitate the removal of non-citizens from voter rolls, verified through federal databases at the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.

Republican lawmakers argue that these measures are essential for maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. “As President Biden has welcomed millions of illegal aliens through our borders, it is incumbent upon Congress to implement greater enforcement measures that secure the voter registration process and ensure only American citizens decide the outcome of American elections,” stated House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

Hans von Spakovsky, a former Federal Election Commission member, emphasized the reality of the problem. “It’s a real problem, not an imaginary problem,” he told The Post, pointing to federal prosecutions and state investigations that have revealed thousands of non-citizens being registered to vote.

The path forward is clear: implement measures to ensure that only Texas citizens participate in Texas elections. This effort aligns with the broader goal of preserving election integrity and maintaining public trust in the voting process. By supporting legislation like the SAVE Act, Texans can take a stand against non-citizen voting and uphold the principle that only Texans should have a say in Texas elections.
