Over the weekend, President Trump and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson gathered at Mar A Lago for a press conference. In their meeting, both men emphasized the importance of securing the border and ensuring that foreign nationals who are already in the country are not able to participate in elections.
Johnson stated, “If an individual only asserts or simply states that they are a citizen, they don’t have to prove it, and they can register that person to vote in a federal election,” he added that “we only want US citizens to vote in US elections.”
Advancing Integrity wholeheartedly agrees with this sentiment. Citizens of other countries should not be able to vote in our elections, whether they are at the local, statewide, or federal level.
Johnson proposed a way to fix this by introducing a federal bill that would require individuals to show proof of citizenship before they cast their ballots.
But of course, with any positive move, there are negative critics who want the integrity of our elections to continue to be compromised. This time, it comes from Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell, who said, “They’re going after something that is already illegal, and by the way, it’s not a thing,” when referring to the legislation Johnson mentioned at the press conference.
Heading into yet another presidential election, Texans and all Americans should have confidence that their ballots are not going to be canceled out by foreign nationals. By introducing legislation and forcing a record vote to ban foreign nationals from participating in our elections, Johnson can give Americans the chance to know exactly where their lawmaker stands on election integrity.
